There are five simple components of a SMART goal. Your goal must be:
S = SPECIFIC
A specific goal has a much better chance of being achieved than a general goal. Use action verbs and be precise about what must be accomplished.
A general goal may be to get in shape, but a specific goal is to walk 30 minutes five days a week starting on Monday.
M = MEASURABLE
Write your goal in a way that you can measure your progress. This helps you stay on track, reach your targets and get excited about your achievement. This motivates you to continue working toward your goals.
Using the above example, your measurement is the amount of time you plan to spend walking (30 minutes) and the number of days each week (five).
A = ATTAINABLE
When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them happen. A good goal should stretch you but also be realistic and attainable so you can experience the sweet taste of success.
Saying that you will exercise at 5 am when you are not a morning person will almost guarantee failure. It may be better to commit to working out at lunch time or in the evening when you are more likely to do it.
R = RELEVANT
Connect your SMART goal to a larger purpose. Are you trying to increase energy? Lose weight? Improve fitness?
For example, I will walk for 30 minutes, five days a week starting on Monday so I can lose weight.
T = TIME-BOUND
Goals without a timeframe have little meaning or urgency. Committing to a time frame helps you stay focused and helps prevent your goals from being overtaken by the day-to-day crises that inevitably come up in life. Choose periods that work best for what you are trying to achieve, or conclude with specific events to participate in. For example, “By walking for 45 minutes five days a week starting on Monday, I will be able to walk 4 miles in 60 minutes by November 1st.”
