Whatever it is, there’s no reason you can’t turn things around and make your morning workout the favorite part of your day.
Plus, there’s scientifically-backed reasoning to do so: Researchers at Bangor University in the UK discovered that morning exercisers tend to workout harder than evening exercisers. And, those who save exercise for the evenings are more likely to suffer from chronic fatigue. You may find that your productivity increases throughout the day after a good morning workout, plus there are also some additional Benefits of Working Out in the Morning.
If you’re not a morning person and you need some help with jump-starting your routine, keep reading. I’ve got the top 6 ways to guarantee you have a good morning workout.
Prepare the Night Before
You shouldn’t give up your good morning workout just because you can’t find your workout clothes or sneakers.
Don’t give yourself an excuse to hop back into bed. Instead, lay out your clothes the night before. It only takes a few minutes, and it can help prevent you from having to frantically search for your belongings in the early morning hours.
Put everything you need in a spot where it is easy to grab: shoes, clothes, water bottle, towel, and anything else you need should all be there.
Stand Up
We all know how tempting it can be to hit the snooze button the second your alarm goes off. Don’t do it!
Instead, hit stop and stand up immediately. Once you’re up, you’re a lot less likely to lay back down again. Plus, usually getting to the gym is the hard part. Once you’re there the motivation usually strikes.
Eat Right
Working out on an empty stomach doesn’t do your metabolism or your energy levels any favors.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to pre-make a small snack before you go to bed that you can grab in the morning and go. Some great pre-workout snacks include apples with cheese, whole wheat toast with peanut butter, a small bag of nuts, or a couple of hard-boiled eggs.
There are actually some really good reasons you need to incorporate carbohydrates into your pre-workout nutrition, check them out here: 4 Reasons You Need Pre-Workout Carbohydrates
Post-Workout Treat
In the beginning, when you’re especially struggling to find the motivation for those morning workouts, it can be a good idea to have a post-workout treat planned to get you psyched.
But, make sure it’s something isn’t over-indulgent that will just cancel out your efforts. A hot cup of coffee, a hearty bowl of oatmeal, or a nice cup of tea from World Tea Directory are all great options.
Get to Bed Early
Hitting the hay early is vital to ensuring you have a good morning workout.
If you’re regularly a night owl, it may take a while to get used to. Start by going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until you land at a time that allows you to get 7-9 hours of solid sleep per night (as recommended by the National Sleep Foundation).
I recently posted an entire article that shows you just how important sleep is to your health, when you Sleep Better, You Live Better.
Use the Buddy System
Getting someone else on board with your morning workout routine can help keep you accountable.
Ask your workout buddy or fitness coach to send you a text in the morning such as, “Good morning! See you at 6.a.m. for our group fitness class!”
Nobody likes a flaky friend, so this may be just what you need to get going.
