Hey Team!
Happy New Year! Did everyone bring in 2013 with a bang? I sure did. OK, maybe not in Time Square with millions of other people watching on TV. Actually, I spent the evening with family and friends and had an enjoyable time watching the kiddos celebrate the arrival of 2013. 2012 was a great year and I expect bigger and better things in 2013.
So…who has made their list of resolutions? Being that this is nearly a week into 2013, how are you doing on those that you defined so far? Some better than others right? Making a list of resolutions should only be done if you fully intend to follow through on them. Good intentions only get you so far; it is you actions that will determine your success! How often have you actually written down your resolutions? If you have, did you share them with anyone else?
“Resolution”, may be an overused word in this area, I prefer the term “Goal” myself. A goal is defined as: target, result or achievement toward which effort is directed. If you haven’t set goals for 2013, do it today, do it NOW! Goals help you focus on what’s important to you and if you aren’t working towards the goals that you have established; then you aren’t doing the right things. Ask yourself this very simple question: How does this help move closer to my goal? If you answer that with honesty you will find yourself checking off your goals in no time.
Something that I am doing and am currently on Day #5 is a 30-Day Push Challenge, hosted by Chalene Johnson. It is a daily task that forces you to focus on your goals and organize your life so that you are working towards accomplishing those goals. I would highly recommend that everyone sign-up to take this challenge on. It’s completely FREE and has been a great personal development resource even only after 5 days. Successful New Years Resolutions
So if fitness is one of your resolutions…err…goals for 2013, what are some tips that I would offer to help you wake up on 12/31/2013 and find yourself exactly where you want to be physically?
- Accountability – This could be your spouse, your sibling, you child, a co-worker anyone that you feel would hold you accountable. There will be days that you don’t want to do it or not feeling 100% and those are the days when the value of having someone hold you accountable is going to matter. Another benefit is that you will push each other more than you possibly could by yourself. A challenge group is a great means to get accountability from many all at the same time. Because, let’s face it, if your spouse/friend/family member is holding you accountable there will be days that you will come to an “agreement” and skip. With the group, there is little to no chance that everyone involved will cut you any slack and keep you going!
- Pace Yourself – If you haven’t been working out consistently, this is going to be a huge factor in your success and prevent burn out. Many people get all caught up in getting start and try to do too much at once and end up hurting their progress. You’ve got to pace yourself, start a little slow. If you have been sitting out and eating junk for the past 6-9 months and then wake up on Jan 1 and decide to start P90X, it’s going to be tough. I am NOT suggesting it can’t be done; in fact I am sure that many have, but knowing you personal limits is important here. If you can only do ½ of the workout, that’s okay! Do that for a week or two before you increase your strength and endurance. The same goes for nutritional changes. Start thinking more about replacing 3-4 “bad foods” with good, whole foods. Start replacing a meal with Shakeology. Eventually you will find yourself losing the craving for all of the highly processed foods that you may be used to eating.
- Track Progress/Results – If you have ever done a Tony Horton program, such as P90X or P90X2, you will notice that he continually preaches to write down your numbers. Rep count, weight used. If you aren’t tracking your progress, your results, it is going to be hard to determine if you are moving forward. This al so would apply to photos! Take your Day 1 photos and continue to take photos every 30 days. At first progress is going to be slow and hardly noticeable. But right when you start to feel like you are never going to see changes, that is right when they start to happen. You have to give yourself at least 5 weeks before measureable/noticeable changes are going to take place. So many people don’t give their bodies enough time to react to what is happening to their bodies and give up far too early. Tracking your results consistently will give you that extra bit of motivation and belief in what you are doing is making a difference.
- Pick an Event – Most of the Beachbody programs are 90 days, some shorter, but in general 90 days is typical. If have an event coming up, a wedding, a reunion, a vacation, a photo shoot, etc…, this is going to be your goal! If you have an event like this keeping you focused on sticking to your efforts with your nutrition and workouts, it will make a huge difference. You wont want to show up to this event and not met the goal you set for yourself. If you don’t have an “event” that fits this description, make one up! Plan something for a date 90-95 days out that will keep you motivated and showing up everyday.
- Avoid Negativity – This is a tough, but important one. You are going to have people that are close to you that are going to give you a hard time, tell you “You can’t do it”, not support you in your journey. You have got to cut those people out of your environment. You don’t need all of the negativity that they bring to you. Unfortunately, a lot of the time the reason that they are negative is because they want what you have or about to have and they don’t want you to achieve it. They may not even know that on a conscious level, but it’s there. You need to surround yourself with people that are going to support you in every aspect of your decision to get fit and healthy. Obviously, this can be a sticky situation if that happens to be a spouse or a family member that you are close with. Stick to you guns though and don’t let that person derail you from your goals.

Let’s help others and pay it forward!
How many of you have/know someone that you think would benefit from being a part of this group? We all probably know SOMEONE that may be struggling with health and fitness.
Who do you know that has high cholesterol, blood pressure issues or blood sugar problems? Do you know someone that needs to lose weight, tone up or gain weight?
If you think you know someone, even if it is just one person, let me know and let’s get them plugged in. A little friendly competition is always beneficial to those involved.
